What’s Your Secret Sauce of Success?

If you look at corporate structure and company hierarchies, you will notice various departments and teams, different layers of reporting systems from junior level executives to senior managers to Department Heads/HODs to Directors/VPs/CFO/CEO etc… 

As much as the Hierarchical Organisational structure intrigues you, we all are bound by company policies to adhere to the reporting system. Some are great leaders who transition into superior & knowledgeable bosses leading teams/several teams while others graduate from a junior level to a much higher position being a stronger team player. The question is, are those who transition to becoming great bosses born leaders? And are those who graduate to becoming stronger team players lack the ability to lead a team? 

Being a leader takes a lot of perseverance, patience, focussed thought process, goal-oriented mindset, systematic and disciplined, are empathic towards team members, hone multiple skills to lead multiple divisions and most importantly, possess the ability to train his/her colleagues while supporting/encouraging them in their work and being assertive when work need to get done. Sounds like a lot of work! Isn’t it? But so is the role of a strong team player. Imagine if everyone wished to be Department Heads and Team Leaders, then we would have no one to work on assignments when instructions would just flow in from the ‘Top of the Hierarchy’ while, when you look down, you hardly have anyone to execute it! 

So, both roles are equally important. In fact, many team players who have supported their bosses and colleagues in assignments for years have moved up the corporate ladder to become awesome bosses, only because they have hustled their way up, know the grind, have worked hard and walked in every shoe possible to acquire that knowledge to become true leaders. Not many these days possess that as we have seen that some privileged ones are simply awarded the gift of leading a team while lacking the true gift of skills or knowledge!

How do you know what works for you? While we can debate about whether there are born leaders or leaders who are made, we can all surely agree that there is no short cut to hard work. Having said that, where do you begin? If you are a fresher or a young working professional who has recently started working, your trick is to first ‘Observe’ and never react. Try and absorb as many skills, behavioural patterns, reactions, responses of your seniors in certain situations, and how they handle challenges. 

Then, the next important step is for you to think about your Career growth and the kind of investment in terms of time you wish to make. While the traditional belief for decades was that you begin your career in Company No. 1 and then slowly and steadily grow up the corporate ladder in that company and that’s how you grow through loyalty towards the company. “A Rolling Stone Gathers NO Moss.” – meaning that the more jobs we change, we will never be able to gather credibility, faith, strength, acquire skills or build a strong platform for us to grow. 

But we are in 2021 and things have changed while the mindset is racing towards how fast we can achieve ‘Growth’ in our career. Time is of great essence. With this thought, we leave you to ponder your next big step.
